I loved this graphic novel because it focuses on breakups and toxic relationships in a way that most YA books don't. Usually, you see breakups in YA lit as a catalyst for new romance. In Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me, the focus is on the unhealthy relationship and how to handle the breakup. There is an open and honest discussion about breakups. They're difficult, messy, emotional. Feelings are hurt. It's something that can take time, and this story makes it clear that's OK. I appreciate the honesty of that discussion, and I think that's something that a lot of teens and even adults need to hear.

The toxic relationship that Laura Dean and Freddy have isn't the worst I've seen in YA lit, but it's definitely not healthy. Instead of using the relationship as a plot device for suspense, or worse yet, to make Laura Dean seem more desirable, it uses it as a plot device for character development for Freddy (and in a way, still builds suspense). Admittedly, Freddy is not perfect. She makes mistakes along the way and makes some unhealthy choices. But the way she handles herself when she finally breaks up with Laura Dean is worthy of a standing ovation.

Other random things: There were a couple panels that were ordered/drawn weird and I found them difficult to follow. Other than that, major props for all the LGBTQ and POC representation. And I loved the random stuffed animals having little side conversations throughout the book. Made me giggle.
