hmmmmmmmm. not nearly as dark and salacious as some of the reviews made it out to be, but i also like stories about fucked up people so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.  hans sucks, obviously, but it’s all so clearly rooted in patriarchy and male insecurity that it’s at least makes sense. some men are just Like That. i think she handles the transformation/descent of both their psyches very well.  

parts of this are very good, and other parts i had no idea what the hell was going on. it was most compelling when it was katarina’s perspective and focused on east/west germany and that was enough to keep me reading, even though it took a bit to get into
