The Cursed
by Harper L. Woods
3.5 stars.
This book was a disappointment after loving book 1 so much. I am perfectly fine with spice, but there was almost too much. And by that, I mean that events happening at page 100 (this book is only 324 pages!) should've been happening at page 50, IMO.
I am fine with the dubious consent portions. The author warned us in book 1 that he is a villain, not morally gray character. And, as a dark romance reader, there's a lot of relationship red flags that I am willing to overlook. (I didn't sign up for a happy, healthy relationship when I picked up this dark supernatural romance.)
It seems like there were a lot of things not fully explored. I feel like we only received a taste of Willow's power, and we didn't really see her grow into her powers. If anything, she just scratched the surface of her control and melding of them in the book.
A primary complaint is that this was pitched as a duology and there was a lot that felt still open at the end. I don't expect everything to be wrapped up at the end (think of a series like Bridge Kingdom where the couples have their own duologies, but larger forces are still happening and continuing from one to the next), but this felt very open. As in are they getting another book? I don't think so, but I also don't think it should've ended with readers not really sure the series/their story was the end or not.
While this book did leave to be desired, I did enjoy it. I will probably re-read in the future, but if some things had been done differently, it easily could've sky-rocketed to one of my favorite series.
