Sanctuary by Rebekah Weatherspoon

4.0

This review is going to be similar to my last one for Weatherspoon's Haven...
Things I loved: Silas, like Shep from Haven is a grumpy-ass hero who also happens to be a self-diagnosed autistic. He's blunt and socially awkward as a result, but the edge he has over Shep is that he wants to fall in love, have a family and build a legacy but recognizes his limitations: "Who am I supposed to give this to? How do I keep this in the family when I can't keep a woman? How so I keep this in the family? How do I grow this business, maybe even turn it into the start of generational wealth when I can't make it through most first dates because the second I'm face to face with a woman I like, I know I can't pretend anymore?" This kind of broke my heart.
Liz, Claudia from Haven's BFF is a former sex worker who worked as a dominatrix to pay for law school and support her younger sister after their parents died while she was still in college. She's a strong woman who's also dealing with trauma after she killed a man in self-defence, which was the reason she had to flee. The sex was extra HOT and even funny, because likes to have control and dominate and Silas is keen to submit and please her.
Things I didn't love: The disconnect with reality. Liz killed a hitman in self-defence and instead of staying in the city while the authorities are trying to figure stuff out, she goes into hiding...maybe I'm supposed to believe that because of the rather transparent racism of the detective and white DA who were assigned to her case and were skeptical of the circumstances that they didn't stay in touch or notice that she was out of town for a couple weeks? That just seems odd to me.
Also, this is a me problem because I find this distracting, but the book could have used a more thorough copyedit - there were unnecessary or misplaced articles like "the" and "a", and wrong words, like "favo(u)r" when the word should have been "favo(u)rite".
