A Crown for Cold Silver
by Alex Marshall
dark
I had really high hopes for this book and I ended up quite disappointed. Turns out there are quite a few things that I don't like about fantasy like this.
Firstly, I hated that there are so many characters. Not only it took me ages to remember all names, but more importantly it made me not care about anyone at all. Surprisingly, I liked Maroto, but he was the only character that I cared about and it lasted the whole book. I cared a little bit about Sullen in the beginning, even about the young Hjortt, because he's the first character we meet.(I would looove to see more of him, especially mixed with his father's perspective. Because with the son dead I couldn't bring myself to care about what his father thinks of him.) But jumping between the POVs and storylines ended up just being boring for me.
Secondly, the story was ok, but kinda forgettable. I hate the misunderstanding trope and some things ended up just being that. And not even because of lying and scheming, just because of characters not knowing things.I was really hoping for some non war related drama from Maroto and Zosia but it just ended up nothing, just Maroto having unrequited feelings. Same thing with grandpa's death.
It also turns out I don't like gore and death lol. But maybe it's because I didn't like the book, it just added to my dislike.
I did enjoy the diversity, some historical references, really liked lack of misogyny and homophobia (y'all books have magic but you need sexism because it's "realistic"? sure.)
It wasn't bad, I know people love these books, but I don't think I'll be efinishing the series. Would watch a show based on it though.
