“Eventually, I decided to start from the outside and work my way in—that’s what often happens in nature, after all. The shedding of skin, rebirth. Animals, birds and insects can provide such useful insights. If I’m ever unsure as to the correct course of action, I’ll think, “What would a ferret do?” or, “How would a salamander respond to this situation?” Invariably, I find the right answer.”

Oh, this book. Eleanor burrowed into my heart from the first page & reading her story was perfection. I highlighted so much of the book that it was difficult to pick one quote at the beginning (& one that wasn’t a spoiler).

I don’t think this will be for everyone, but it was such a special and unique read. It’s one of those rare books that made me think, “yes, this is why I read”. I haven’t felt quite this way about a novel since I read All the Light We Cannot See a couple years ago.

The story starts off quirky and comical, but slowly starts to unfold & what we learn about Eleanor was so much deeper than I expected. She’s an incredible character.

The audiobook is also quite good!

“The moment hung in time like a drop of honey from a spoon, heavy, golden.”
