1984 was assigned to read in my English class and I’m still looking back on it now. The plot design was confusing in the beginning but I really understood it at the end, especially with different characters and surprises. The paradox of chocolate and Winston being greedy as a young child (similar to the Parsons family) is such a small parallel that I didn’t notice it until our English discussion. How Winston is willing to do what ever it takes to be apart of the Brotherhood (like O’Brien asking if Winston will throw sulphuric acid on an innocent child or committing suicide) and obey the laws of O’Brien and Goldstein. It didn’t occur to me when reading the book but it made me realize that Winston is the worshiper and ideological Big Brother of his dead sister and of society. I think if I read the book again or in my free time, I would understand the plot more and find even more parallels.
