karathagan 's review for:
The Man Who Was Thursday: A Nightmare
by G.K. Chesterton
After highlighting almost the entirety of the first three pages to share with my mother, I just recommended that she read the whole thing. The writing sent me spiraling, reveling in glorious prose and the most satisfying observations of human nature. Writing like this makes me want to be a good writer just so I can explain how it makes me feel.
The plot aside, this book is chock full of brilliant phrasing, humorous quips and situations, and just plain mind candy. The plot itself, billed as a political thriller, was engaging and wild with twists and amusing happenstances. Right up to the end, I enjoyed it until everything fell apart. I was annoyed by the ending, in part because the writing pulled me in, a trail of oh-so-satisfying scenes and chapters and events, keeping me enthralled on the edge of ecstasy - until it dropped me from the heights into a cold bath and disappeared with no closure and no resolution. I know it was an artistic choice and the writing met a need, so I only took off half a star.
**Several months after reading, I mostly remember this for the terrible ending and would take off a whole star for that now.
