A Split in the Road by C.R. Guiliano, C.R. Guiliano
4.0
"He called out, but his mom didn’t stop and before long, he could no longer see her through the trees. His heart lurched, knowing he was being left behind."
I was so glad to discover the author wrote Samuel's story. There were hints given about it in previous installments and since I liked what I had seen of him, I really wanted to get his background. Samuel is a pyrina, a rare type of true vampire that can only feed from their bonded master, and they have empathic and other abilities. Samuel had already warmed my heart in the glimpses I had seen of him and I was positive I would fall for him. I wasn't wrong.
Samuel and his mother are part of Master Dumas's clan and he's about as vile as they come. When he Master Dumas tells Samuel that he's going to force mate him, Samuel says no because Master Dumas isn't his true mate. That doesn't go over so well and Samuel, and his mother run from the clan with the kedges following. His mother outdistances Samuel as all pyrina are much smaller than true vampires, and abandons him. He's lucky to get a ride from Tay, a truck driver, who takes him to his sister's home for the holidays. This would have been perfect except the blood bond with Master Dumas allows him to find Samuel and he kills Tay, his sister and her unborn child, her vampire husband, and their son.
"He deserved whatever came his way for causing the death of an innocent human family, deserved the torture for being the reason his mate was gone from this world. No matter what Master Dumas did to him, it would never be enough to relieve the guilt and anguish."
I was, possibly, even happier than Samuel was when Alpha Master Kylor came, killed Master Dumas, and took Samuel back to his clan. Samuel had just about given up and was determined to waste away and die, regardless of the force feedings he was given. When Kylor saves him, Samuel realizes he owes it to Tay, who he believed was his mate, to not just give up, but to continue on and do what he can to help others in situations similar to his. With Samuel's abilities, he can tell that Kylor is a good, honest dyad, and Samuel is grateful to be safe. Samuel is good for Kylor, too, bringing his humor and teasing, to the clan, and especially making Kylor laugh - a much needed thing!
"Kylor had a sneaky feeling, as he glanced down at the pyrina that Samuel was going to worm his way into everyone’s heart. He was kind and sweet, and honest. As a pyrina, he was instinctively calming and caring. He wasn’t arrogant, though he had a smart mouth on him..... Not including Hillier and Kylor’s kedges, Samuel would be the male closest to him."
Hands-down, this has been my favorite novella of the series, so far. I'm crazy about Samuel and I loved getting his story. Hopefully, the next installment, will find him a mate, or two!
