this book appears deeply personal for the author and other trans and non-binary folks and i appreciate that a lot. i think that the author’s youth does show a lot in this novel. not that everything needs to be mature, and i think that, in living queer, “maturing” happens differently, but as other reviewers have said, for middle-aged characters, there is not a lot of that “middle-aged” fan vibe. i do appreciate the relationships with and between different characters. it was a bummer that the plot and mystery were a set-dressing for introspection and character self-discovery in their entirety (it seemed to me), but i can appreciate the characters’ movements in any direction.
