I re-read The Hobbit yearly if I can along with LOTR. This time I read the graphic version on the occasion of Tolkien Reading Day on the 25th of March 2020.

I love the opening sentence of this book, “in a hole in the ground, there lived a hobbit.” 😊 Such a promising and intriguing beginning! And off we go, diving into Middle Earth, Tolkien’s world of Hobbits, Dwarves, Elves, Wizards and Men. Bilbo and the dwarves are on an epic treasure hunt and on the way to the Lonely Mountain, where lives the dragon Smaug guarding his hoard of treasure. On the way they must battle evil goblins, wargs, trolls and spiders and Bilbo must use every ounce of his unique brand of courage and creativity to get them out of several tight spots! This is the ultimate adventure yarn and I’ve always enjoyed it.

I loved the illustrations in this one and my only crib is that the text is tiny and I had a tough time reading it. It is however well abridged and narrated, retaining Tolkien’s essence while condensing his content. The bittersweet-ending always brings a lump to my throat. Tolkien tackles every major theme in literature through this and his LOTR trilogy and it often puts me in mind of the Mahabharata - our own more complex home grown epic that similarly tackles every theme and relationship that one can think of! The latter though is not for children unless in a very watered down version.

5 ⭐️ for the story but 4 ⭐️ for this edition because the text was tiny and made for difficult reading. As always an enjoyable revisit to Middle Earth 😊
