The Rooster Bar by John Grisham
5.0

Dang, I love this work! The socio-political issue this time was a student loans and immigration. That’s all I’m gonna say. Sooooooo good. And, I was introduced to Saint-Louis, Senegal . . . ;)

Okay, I read some of the non-five star reviews to see why people didn’t love this. And, I have to admit that 1) I am a lawyer; 2) I’ve been reading Grisham since law school; 3) as an adjunct professor, I know this student loan “schmess” is a real thing; 4) I just returned to the US from Africa; 5) my friend-circle is very diverse including first and second generation Americans who remain close to family in other countries around the world.

So, with those caveats, the legal spin is creative. I know that. Skipping out on law school in the last semester of your 3rd year is pretty unrealistic. BUT, facing the reality of a friend’s suicide, almost and in excess of $200K+ in student loans and little chances of a job with a salary to make the first loan repayment in 6 months . . . Well . . .

Anyway, I enjoyed it. Thank you for bringing light and fiction to what can be a very stressful career. While most people wouldn’t believe some of the wild stories lawyers experience in the real world, I don’t doubt the presence of reality bites woven all through this book. Of the last 2 books (Camino Island), this one is definitely my favorite. ;)
