Rather than having any interest in or prior knowledge of the subject material (I don't), I picked this up because I really enjoyed another book by this author, Monster Hunters, and I wanted to read more of his work. This book isn't quite as good, in my opinion.
Much of what impressed me about Monster Hunters was how careful the author was not to mock his subjects or even describe them sarcastically; he writes so well that he was able to let their conduct and values speak for themselves. In this book, he seems a little more willing to disparage some of the people in the RLSH scene. Heroes in the Night leans more toward gonzo journalism overall, with the author getting deeply involved in RLSH patrols, so maybe that tone is appropriate to this work. I just prefer the writing in his other book.
I learned a lot about the RLSH movement and enjoyed the vivid descriptions of the cast of characters and their antics. This book seems to be the author's first, so I'm hopeful that the writing I enjoyed in his other work continues into his more recent books, as I will definitely seek those out the next time I want to delve into something weird and real.
