Drowning by T.J. Newman
3.0

I picked this book up at my local library, since the premise really intrigued me -- and I'm a big fan of disaster movies and novels. It certainly scratched those itches for me as I blew through it over the course of two days. However, the book was thrilling in ways that are akin to a James Patterson novel -- quick and cheap, and not every thrill feels warranted or earned. There's little background on the characters before getting into the disaster (which begins on page 1!), and the details come across so quickly and densely, that I kept forgetting who was who --even by name.

That said though, the book has a few standout moments that make it more than an adequate summer read. I can certainly see why this one is being picked up for its film rights. (Side note: I'm surprised that the reviews that I've read of this book make no reference to Airport '77, which clearly had the same premise...)
