Clarissa: Or the History of a Young Lady
by Samuel Richardson
As a story, it was a good one. As far as implementation of the story though? Yikes. 1500+ pages of OH I CAN'T - OH YOU MUST - OH I CAN'T - OH YOU MUST... I have to admit I did skim a BIT, sometimes. Perhaps I'm ruined by modern attention-span deficiencies and loose morals, but I really lost patience with Miss Clarissa and her "dying of grief". I wanted to shout at her: get over yourself. But if she had, then I suppose we wouldn't have this book, we'd have some sort of novella.
It's in the form of letters, and as they begin in January and run through to December I thought it would be fun to read them in real-time, sort of, 200-odd years too late, but they grew less frequent after mid-September so I just mashed on and finished it up.
Would I recommend it? Sure, IF you're prepared for a LOT of repetition, a LOT of 'woe is me', and a lot of 18th century moralizing.
