The Originals: The Resurrection by Julie Plec

4.0

I don't dare to say how long I already have this book, but finally I found the perfect excuse to read it. If the Originals doesn't fit a Halloween themed spook-a-thon, I don't know what else does. But while reading the book, I also felt a sudden kind of sadness. No more new books, no more new episodes. This really was the very last new content with Elijah and Klaus as the main characters. But at least the book ended with a bang.

The last book of the Originals trilogy contains all those little things we came to love so much: Klaus is creating a vampire army, Elijah is trying to hold the city and his family together and Rebekah is falling for a man of whom she can't be a hundred percent sure he can be trusted. And no matter how often we read or see this, knowing that it does go wrong at some point, I just can't get enough of it. If Julie Plec decided to write three more books, I'd be one of the first people to buy them.

One of the other elements I really love about the books, is the writing style. Julie Plec has a very easy to read and follow, even for non-native speakers, way of phrasing and describing things. I could literally read 120 pages an hour, without missing anything. And because of me being able to read the book this fast, I could really drown in the suspense and the tension. (Although we all know that somehow things turn out okay, since many years later the Originals are still alive)

But I also really loved spending so much time inside the heads of Klaus, Elijah and Rebekah. They each get their own chapters, completely written in their point of view. This gives us the chance to read their thoughts and minds and to get a better feel for them as characters, what drives them, what makes them tick and why they do certain things.

And last but not least: I love how this last book clearly finishes the foundation on which the series and the characters are built. We see where they come from and we know why their doom will always be just around the corner, waiting for them. Because they might be almost immortal, but we all know that almost is the key here.

And now I want to do a series-rewatch.
