On the Come Up by Angie Thomas

emotional tense medium-paced

4.0

I think it's fair to say that I'll read whatever Thomas comes out with next, and my guess is I'll enjoy it as much as everything else I've read by her.

Her wordsmithing is excellent, and she does a phenomenal job writing characters who are real and easy to root for. They grapple with complicated things that have serious stakes. I particularly like how she writes family dynamics, both at the level of sibling to sibling and then child to parent.
