Memories of Ice by Steven Erikson
4.0

An enjoyable book overall and definitely an improvement in writing.

In particular I liked that there were characters in this book that I actually became invested in - Itkovian, Brukhalian and Karnadas. The seige of Pale was very enjoyable and I also was intrigued by the characters of the Matron and Tayschrenn (despite little development - perhaps more in other books?). The majority of the story lines held up and the revisiting of aspects of stories from the previous two books was a great choice (especially when we get a new interpretation of a scene we think we know).

Some definite downsides that lessened the enjoyment somewhat. I thought the events with Whiskeyjack, Moon’s Spawn and the overall seige of Coral were very predictable and mundane in comparison to Pale. I didn’t appreciate that the characters of the Seer (himself) and his Septarch in Pale are very thin plot devices, as was the ‘reveal’ at the rift in Morn. And the resolution for the Mhybe didn’t sit right with me somehow.

That said I’ll continue the series, though maybe at a slower pace than before.
