I've been wanting to read this since high school. But gladly, I started this now, after some education on neuroscience, to fully appreciate the tales presented.
Although I know and understand the physiology of the human brain and, begrudgingly, am familiar with the names and history of those discovered parts and functions, I find myself bewildered at the stories behind them. From the gruesome dueling surgeons of Henri II, the mystifying kuru disease (my personal favourite), to the all-time classic H.M and Phineas Gage, each story is told with care and, surprisingly, whimsicality. Aiding the stories is our current understanding of the particular brain part, as well as how neuroscientists arrived at its functionality with crude instruments and guesstimation. One cannot help but appreciate the work these have put in and the advancement we have come since then.
