This book started SO good. Yes, I could see lots of influences, but they were all organically introduced and worked.
I saw the influence of G.R.R. Martin and the Black Watch with the boys being gathered away from their homes. I could see Robin Hobb's influence with the wolf/dog as a compagnion.Learning the trade of a blacksmith, something that we get to see a little with Perrin in The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. Even a little bit of Harry Potter with magical school. All these things were fun to experience with Vaelen.
I love the beginning. the middle was boring, then three quarters through it got better, then it got worse towards the end.
It was like four different stories in one book. Four different styles of writing. Four different desires.
I am going to proceed to the sequel...and I'm hoping that it reconnects with the GOOD part of the story.
Vaelen is a great charcter, but it seemed like he got lost in the story for a while. It became a lot bigger and the part that he was in became less significant.
