pagemaid 's review for:
For Whom the Bell Tolls
by Ernest Hemingway
FINALLY finished reading this. I did not care for it. It was at times very tedious, and so depressing, and I disliked the 'romance', because I really didn't like the way Maria was written. She didn't have a personality outside of wanting to be there to please Robert Jordan. I suppose I can see why this is considered to be a classic, and I appreciated the themes about the futility and cruelty of war, and I especially appreciated the chapter where Pilar tells how ordinary citizens and neighbors became bloodthirsty enemies, but it's not like I enjoyed reading about any of that. I'm glad I finished it but I probably won't be attempting another Hemingway any time soon, if ever.
