This sort of horror— set at wellness retreats, health spas, etc.— isn’t the sort of horror I usually go for. I actually tend to not go for it because all of that makes me roll my eyes and makes the story less enjoyable. That being said, I decided to give it a try this time.
It was definitely still a struggle sometimes, I hated every second of the actual wellness activities being played out, but the fact that Hannah started waking up to the bullshit, too, made it more tolerable. That being said, the deaths in this book were gross, they were gory, they were memorable. Exactly the kind of deaths I love in slasher films.
Is this a deep book that’s going to answer life’s questions? No. But is it fun? Absolutely. And sometimes that’s all I’m looking for, is a fun slasher with a pretty good twist and a badass final girl.
