Like atmospheric crime pot boilers with a flawed detective as MC? The Wolf Tree will hit that sweet, thrilling spot.
Set on a remote Scottish island where the protagonists are stranded with the 200-odd villagers harbouring a century-old grudge against "mainlanders" among other dark secrets. The creepy priest, curmudgeonly old man and village gossip are all present. Throw in a female detective recovering from a violent attack, juicy red herrings and a wolf howl where no wolves live and I could have devoured this in one sitting. If I didn't have, you know, life stuff. Pfft.
George isn't that silly and I have to admire her grit despite being haunted by her attack.
