What Are You Going Through by Sigrid Nunez

5.0

I enjoyed reading this book. As the blurb says, the book is about different conversations the narrator has with other people, discussions about what is happening in their lives. Prominent among them is her friend who's terminally ill. All these encounters have life/meaning of life as a common theme among them. They are skewed mostly towards the existential aspect of life. And most of the ideas resonated with me! It's quite rare (at least for me) to find a book that I agree with on most counts. I'd give five stars just for that.

There's also an imagined conversation she has with a cat where the cat describes its life so far and what it went through. Although I am not a pet-person, I found myself feeling bad for what the cat had to go through. It isn't tragic, yet it's heartbreaking in some way. That part of the book was also a highlight for me.

The prose itself flows seamlessly. It felt very smooth in terms of how it reads, and that made it all the more enjoyable to read this book :)
