Soulless by Gail Carriger
5.0

Evil Scientists, Strange Machines, Werewolves and Vampires. Oh, my!

Soulless is the first in a series featuring Alexia Tarabotti, a Victorian London spinster lady from a good family, whose prospects are non-existent. Alexia lives in a world where vampires and werewolves live amongst non-supernatural folks. Alexia knows she’s different, and not just because her father was Italian, but it was a well-kept secret or so she thought.

Carriger gives us a seamless story integrating vampire hives, werewolf packs, an automaton, an evil scientist, and strange machines galore. Her characters, even the secondary ones, are carefully and cleverly drawn. There are no missteps here, nothing to take the reader out of the story.

If you don’t think you’d ever be interested in werewolves and/or vampires, take a chance on this author and this book. You won’t be disappointed. This is fun, well-written read with a strong heroine, humor, and even romance. You will find yourself smiling at the antics of Alexia and her friends, the werewolves and vampires and even, occasionally, laughing out loud.
