You Could Make This Place Beautiful: A Memoir
by Maggie Smith
This book read, for me, as the author's effort to process a personal trauma via narrative format. As a memoir, it seemed to take itself Very Seriously while simultaneously being absolutely tortured about its existence as a published piece of writing. Too much meta commentary. I found myself wondering, did the author even want to write this? How much of this book was written out of a sense of obligation?
