El Deafo by Cece Bell
5.0

I know, I know -- it took me way too long to read El Deafo. I KNEW I was going to like it -- I don't think I've heard one negative review since it came out in 2014 -- I guess maybe I was saving it? Or because everyone else was so excited about it I didn't feel like I needed to read it because everyone was checking it out without my prompting?

In any case, I finally read it because we're having a local theatre come and do a performance of the play as our Summer Reading kick-off, and I am booktalking the book to get kids excited about coming.

And of course, it's just as good as everyone says it is. I can usually finish a J graphic novel in one one-hour sitting or so -- but I couldn't with this one. It's DENSE! There's a LOT going on, and there's a lot of text. We basically follow the author's childhood from the time she's little all the way up through elementary school, and there's a LOT to pack in.

The thing I loved the most about this book is that it's not JUST about being deaf (and dealing with the consequences and social ramifications, etc.). It's also about...being a kid. And all the weird relationships and feelings you have. And how weird and complicated (and wonderful) friendships can be.

It's great. I was, of course, silly to wait.
