The Hunchback of Notre-Dame
by Victor Hugo
While I certainly enjoyed the story, and am glad I finally read it, the first third of the book is a bit (!) too lengthy a description of Paris in the 15th Century than was necessary to get into the wonderful tale of Quasimodo and Esmeralda. The archdeacon is one of the great villains in literature, casting major aspersions on the role of the church in society, and the other characters are believable and beautifully drawn. All in all, a great masterpiece.
