Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo
4.0

I read the Six of Crows Duology first and I think it was just stellar. This series I think is good, not great, and I don't see a reread in my future. It felt like a sort of slow adventure that ends with a twist that didn't feel supported by anything that came before it so it had to be explained. There was no click in my brain where the reveal was like, "oh of course." Then the ending feels a bit rushed with another new power and of the three people she could choose she went with the most realistic option. But I just don't go to fantasy for the boring guy. There was a time in the first book where I rooted for him but he was too petty, jealous, mopey until the very end where he did a 180 and she accepted it without question.

I was on team Nikolai but would have accepted a turn to the dark side twist over the ending. Still, the writing is so good that I flew through the book and had strong feelings about the main characters.
