Lovely story with a wonderful cast of characters.  I sort of had doubts that I'd enjoy this, but all my doubts had disappeared.  The children were all lovable and unique.  The fantastical elements were believable, and everything just worked out beautifully.  The romance wasn't heavy, but it flowed well with the rest of the book.  The topic of prejudice and racism was realistically portrayed in the story, and it's reflective of our current world.  Ultimately, this book left me with lots of warm fuzzies, and it's one I will re-read when I need a rambunctious group of kids to cheer me up!
