This was such an amazing story. I was captured and invested from the very beginning, and I had to know what happened next, so I couldn’t put the book down.
Historical fiction is generally not my genre, but if it’s written like this GIVE IT ALL TO ME! I laughed, I got misty, I stared into space for a while, and I gasped more than I thought I would.
there are lengthy and detailed descriptions of sexual assaults (multiple) and a mutilation, which made it book a little difficult to read at times, but descriptions aside it’s an amazing story. The animals are lovable, and the people (minus a handful) are just as enjoyable. I loved the epistolary nature of the novel that tracked Martha’s day-to-day.
The rooster to hen moment towards the end of the novel really shocked me and I had to listen to it more than once to grasp the reality of what happened.
