Re-reading this, I remember how glad I was that she ended up with Conrad, but I still disliked the ending of this book so much lol.
I’ll start off by saying that I hate how the author draggeddddddddd the wedding storyline out until the last chapter or so. Also hate how we didn’t even get to really see how her and Conrad reconciled and FINALLY were able to have a healthy relationship that led to marriage.
I don’t think the author did their story enough justice in this book. Yes, we finally got a love confession but it was so messy and under such terrible circumstances that it felt tainted somehow.
We only ever got to see them in angst and separated by all these obstacles and then boom, we jump to them being married?? And all we get is a couple letters from when they hadn’t even officially reconnected?! Felt like a cop out ending and I really hope they give us more in season 3 of the show.
Besides that, the author spent a lot of time villainizing Jeremiah’s character which I felt like was a cheap way to try and sway readers to loving Conrad for Belly instead. In my opinion, Belly and Conrad were always endgame, irrespective of Jeremiah, and I don’t think it was necessary to assassinate Jeremiah’s character to drive that point home. In previous books, Jeremiah was consistently described in a way that indicated he would never do something as hurtful as cheat on Belly.
To add to that, I do agree with other reviewers on the issue with the author presenting the brothers in a positive vs. negative light to create further bias (e.g. Conrad being so neat, smart and the well-meaning, protective brother versus Jeremiah being this messy, nonchalant frat boy). I think it would have made the story more nuanced to have both brothers be mature, viable candidates for Belly and with her choice boiling down to who she really loved based on her heart.
All in all, I’m still glad she ended up with Conrad but the ending was a bit underwhelming and I wish their story had more time to shine in this book once they were actually happy with each other. Crossing my fingers they’ll make up for it in the tv show!
