4.5
The first two thirds of the novel left me feeling that I'd found a new favourite book - certainly the best book I'd read this year. But the final third felt strange - almost like she'd written a much braver and truer conclusion but been told to make things more conventional. That said, in that final third I really enjoyed the Pioneer perspective. There was a real problem with Sadie's former tutor - he should not have been allowed back in to the narrative and I would have been infinitely happier if he'd been called out and the right words used. Given how strongly I feel about these and a few other things, it's really telling this still gets a 9 out of 10. Really really excellent and quite personally resonant. Really got across a genuine love of computer games.
Moderate: Domestic abuse
Although the domestic abuse depicted isn't terribly graphic or prolonged, the abuser reappears in the narrative as if it wasn't a big thing.
