The Sullen Sky Mystery by Henry Christopher Bailey

4.75

It's interesting- I'd read that Joshua Clunk was an antihero type character but as far as I can tell, with one or two slight exceptions, I'd say he's unambiguously the good guy here and most of his antagonist elements are just him antagonizing the police. He definitely comes across as more of a Perry Mason than a Randolph Mason- he's not going to let the police get away with nonsense just because of who they are, and he doesn't strike me as particularly self-serving, except, again, for one particular element (and even there I think his decision can be seen as at least morally gray). The story itself is great, and I was very much successfully led down the garden path on the identity of the murderer
or rather, one of the murderers
. Delightfully twisty and turny and enjoyable throughout- like a Perry Mason book if Erle Stanley Gardner were a completely different kind of person and writer.
