Ringworld by Larry Niven

2.0

This was another of those random Audible audiobook offers. I had heard of it before but have never read any Larry Niven. I quite liked it but it didn't really blow me away. There's an odd mix of hard science with somewhat slapstick humour. It actually reminded me of the early non-Discworld Pratchett books (though obviously this was written first) but not always in a complementary manner.

The Ringworld itself is an interesting concept and I liked the future history and relationships between the aliens but ultimately it's a bit cold and has a frustrating (though inevitable) ending.

In terms of the audiobook, the guy reading would be better for a crime noir type book and he has a clipped abrupt manner very much in that vein. I got used to it and he's actually quite good but it seemed a bit weird to start. Overall it's a a reasonable way to spend the commute but I'm not that keen on reading any more in the series.
