The Wind in the Willows
by Kenneth Grahame
After the first couple of chapters I really thought that I would love this book. I thought I would fly through it and give it 5 stars... Instead I have given it 3 stars and it took me more than a month to read it even thought his book is only 250 or so pages!
My main issue with this book were the characters. I loved Badger, he was great! Mole had his moments, he could be a pushover at times but hey, that's his character. He is also sweet and kind so I could forgive him. Two characters that I could not forgive though were Rat and Toad. Rat... He was such a bad friend at times. Ignoring Mole, pushing over him, forcing his way and opinions... I really disliked him and felt bad for Mole because he considers him to be a true friend. But Rat is nothing compared to Toad. Toad absolutely ruined this book for me. I could write a whole rant review on my dislike of Toad but I don't think you would be interested in reading that so I won't. To keep it short: Toad is the most annoying, irritating, stupid, arrogant and disgusting character that I have probably ever read about. I HATE HIM! He makes so many mistakes, gets into a lot of trouble (and his friends too), seems to repent his ways and then whenever he gets out of whatever short of trouble he got into he is the same despicable creature as he was before, congratulating himself on doing something that he definitely didn't do! He learns nothing throughout his book, his character doesn't improve and the author sadly didn't kill him off during one of his stupid car obsessed trips. The book would have improved much if this did happen but alas...
I feel pretty frustrated after finishing this. I thought I was going to love it but instead I got to know one of the worst characters ever in my opinion! The three stars are for: Badger (1,5 star), Mole (0,5 star) and the adventures without Toad in it (1 star, mostly at the beginning and some later on in the book).
