The Bully
by Sophie Lark
The Bully is the third book in Sophie Lark’s the Kingmaker’s series and can be read as a standalone, but best read (in order) after the first two books in the series. It is a darker, enemies to lovers bully romance that sees Dean Yenin following through on his threats to blackmail Cat Romano since he learned her secret. But sometimes the best laid plans do go as planned. Sometimes the people you try to take down, instead lead you to your redemption.
Good Lordy! What an emotional roller coaster ride complete with laughing out loud, intermittent crying jags, and ALL the feels! This story had me gripped from beginning to end and was easily my favorite Sophie Lark book yet. The world building in the Kingmaker’s series has been fantastic. The various roles, the history, the intrigue and a mystery that will leave you wanting more. As with all Sophie’s books, the story is extremely well written and is well paced. It doesn’t feel like there are any lags and the pages pass quickly. I basically sat down to read it and couldn’t put it away until it was done.
The character development is phenomenal. You want to know about all the characters, not just the protagonists. You care about what happens to them and want to learn more. There would be a book for them all if I had my way, lol. Cat is the perfect compliment to Dean. They were raised similarly, but she’s always had her sister to love and protect her from the worst in their lives. She’s a people pleaser who is small and unassuming, but she has a fire inside her. Her attraction to her tormentor takes her by surprise, but in the end, the relationship will help to transform both of them into the people they’re meant to be.
Dean Yenin. Son of Adrian Yenin, accountant for the Moscow Bratva. Cousin to Leo Gallo and all around persona non grata at Kingmakers. Dean is completely possessive of Cat from the moment they begin their “relationship". She is his and there’s nothing he won’t do for her. “You don’t’ know what a monster I can be, but I’ll be your monster. Everything I do will be for you. To protect you. To help you. To love you every day of my life. I’ll burn this whole f*cking world down for you if that’s what you want”. /fans self. Dean is fascinated by the fact that someone who looks like her and acts like her could have killed in such a coldly calculating way. The sexual tension and chemistry between the two of them is crazy hot and their sexual journey is an integral part of the story of them and who they become. More than anything, this is his story. His tragic beginnings, his journey, the relationships he develops that enable redemption, and the relationships he gains because of that redemption. There are just so many feels here.
