This was an interesting book for me. I really enjoyed how the story progressed somehow solely through one perspective. I looked forward to the first line in every of Screwtape's letters to Wormwood. I was hoping for a final letter from Wormwood at the end but we didn't get one. But what an ending that was! Absolutely left me scrambling.
With this piece, I mainly enjoyed the fictional aspect of the story. The religious commentary not so much. I think the main thing was that I found it all so terribly boring. There was nothing introspective about the ramblings of Screwtape. I was expecting interesting commentary about the condition of man and how hope and humanity is linked to spirituality. But it was more rudimentary, taken down to a very basic level: annoying mothers, lust for women, and male competition. Which now thinking about it, kinda makes sense coming from the devil himself - he does not see what the fuss is about when it comes to humans. But SURELY after all this time, he understands our inner workings a bit more than that.
I'll admit, I did not give this book the time of day that it probably needed. I listened to it via audiobook to and from work and at times found myself spaced out after a long day of work. More effort is needed from me before I make my opinion so concrete.
