The Outsiders
by S.E. Hinton
i think i’m a little too old to grasp the magic of this book.
for being written by a young author at the time it was, the outsiders is cool. it’s grungy, it has heart, it has really well-drawn characters. there’s a LOT that comes off as cliche, and the way slang is woven in can feel stilted at times. ponyboy is a lovable protagonist but a confusing, often unrealistic one. and the cps plot line that is teased through the whole book is never resolved, which i personally find unsatisfying.
i’m glad to have read this though, and i appreciate its status as a classic. plus it was quick and snappy.
