Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of a Modern Royal Family by Omid Scobie, Carolyn Durand

5.0

I harbor a few secret shames, and among those is a passing curiosity about celebrity gossip. Thus, anyone with an eye toward entertainment news could not avoid the kerfuffle around Harry and Meghan as their story hit the news a few years back. I tend to imagine the people behind the headlines rather than becoming emotionally riled over what journalists are telling us to think, feel, or believe. As such, this book seemed like a more humane approach to the story of H&M. It painted them as genuine people who fell in love and were forced onto a world stage by happenstance of his birth and her career. The public at large was free to throw as much garbage as possible at these people they'd never met while H&M attempted to rise above, put on a stiff upper lip, and actually be voices for good rather than running and hiding as I think most people would do if our lives had open season declared upon us.
At the end of the day, I don't know these people, but neither do you. We can villify them if we're petty enough, or we can shrug and wish them the best if we have an ounce of compassion and are willing to attribute positive intent. I know which I choose.
