Watchmen: The Deluxe Edition by Alan Moore

5.0

I've known "Watchmen" to be one of those defining classics for years, but haven't gotten around to actually reading it until now. Which, I think might be a blessing in disguise, because, in many ways, this story is just as striking, relevant, and moving today as it ever was in the 1980's.

From the first page, you know you're starting something special, and that gut reaction does not depart until long after you close the cover. There is not a single wasted panel, single line of superfluous dialogue; nothing is overly expository––even the many monologues skirt that impossible line of "show-don't-tell" with poise––or too vague. Everything serves a purpose and it all builds up to a thundering finale that left me breathless. The moment I finished the final page I already wanted to read it again.
