Six Wild Crowns by Holly Race

5.0

4-4.5 stars rounded up for enjoyment — I listened to this book on audio and thoroughly enjoyed it!

A mix of historical fiction, fantasy and romance, it has a lot going on. I cannot say pacing is perfect, and I think marketing it as a Sapphic Romance is a misfire. To put it plainly, the Sapphic romance is minimal and never pays off. It’s mostly yearning and light flirting.

With that out of the way, the major themes are female friendship, female lineage, mythology, patriarchy, control in relationships, historical fiction and fantasy. It mostly focuses on Anne Boleyn and Jane Seymour, barely the other 4 queens (again, a surprise to me based on the marketing), and their rivalry and friendship.

The world-building is magical, the relationships with the women and with Henry are very intriguing, and I loved Boleyn’s portrayal. However, Seymour suffers somewhat from “blank slate” syndrome and again, pacing is off at times.

I didn’t know this was part of a series and look forward to getting to know the other queens better. It wasn’t a perfect read but it was a ton of fun!
