The Complete Dreamsongs by George R.R. Martin

2.0

I don't like reviewing Short Story collections, because often they're a mixed bag that doesn't really equate well to a single rating.

So it is here. You have those horrible first few short stories from the beginning of Mr. martins carreer which rightfully never found publishing.

Then there's gems like Sandkings and... Well I'm sure there were others I liked. But like with most short stories they're easy to forget.

For reviews of short stories like Hedge Knight or Ice Dragon that were printed elsewhere, see those books.

I have points with most of the stories though:
- GRRM seems to have problems with finding a woman, then weight gain and finally bitchy wives as is evident from his stories. That's all I want to say in general.

-the pear shaped man is not horror, it is merely horrible. Just because you can make something sound disgusting does not make it scary. It just makes the story disgusting.

- Under Siege is in there twice. But he changed it so it's okay?

- The Wild card short stories were actually decent, I guess. Not much into super hero stories myself though.

- Skin Trade. If you liked it, go read the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. He did it better.

- And finally I want to say something about Tuf. Because the subject of those stories are dear to my heart. Environmentalism and ecology.
Which is why I'm all the more dissapointed that Tuf is a hypocritical asshole. He expects everyone to hail him as THE Savior, despite clearly and obviously proving in the first story he might just as well fuck you over and ruin everything you love for all you know. So yeah. GRRM mentioned heroes need to stand out, but guess what? They also need to be likeable in at least SOME way.
Also his science is shoddy as dicks. In the 2nd story there is no possible way the Reveal could happen by evolutionary methods in ANY way shape or form. Evolution simply doesn't allow that amount of waste of energy to occur for no apparent reason.
