The Bewitching of Aveline Jones
by Phil Hickes
True Rating: 3.75/5 Stars
Content/Trigger Warnings: Discussion and brief descriptions of death
My Thoughts
I read the first book in this series, "The Haunting of Aveline Jones," in October and fell in love with it. I gave it a 4 out of 5 stars because while it wasn't perfect, it was a perfectly spooky ghost story. I was really excited to check out the rest of the series, and as a follow-up, this one was...mildly disappointing.
"The Bewitching of Aveline Jones" follows Aveline on holiday with her mom, in a small village that has its own circle of "witch stones." While exploring, Aveline meets a young girl named Hazel, who is definitely more than what she seems. Despite being happy to make a new friend, Aveline senses something off with Hazel, and sets out to figure out a way to help her friend.
Despite my lower rating of this book, it's by no means a terrible one. The story still carries the creepiness from the first one, and goes a little of a step further at one particular point. However, it does seem to jump a bit all over the place. There were just certain plot points (such as Aveline being joined by Harold) that take away some of the danger. On top of that, the end of the story was...eh. You're either going to love it, or your going to hate it. It just felt disappointing compared to the ending of the previous one.
Although the book does have some issues for me, it's still a good spooky read for children and briefly touches on some small details about the history of witches that people like to overlook. It's also great that, again, Aveline is helped more by the women around her, as well as her own wits and determination, rather than the men brought in.
I still definitely recommend this book, just don't expect the same level of creepy as the first book.
