The Night of Baba Yaga by Akira Otani
Is explosive!!!
Honestly I cannot get over how good this Japanese novel truly is. I read it in one sitting, even as I tried to savor it. The novel was an awesome story about an outsider forced to be the bodyguard of a gangster’s daughter. At the same time we are told snippets of a man and woman amazed that they were able to run away for so long from gangsters. We are taken into the inner workings of the Japanese mob, culture, ideals and honour.
And up until the last quarter, it’s a fairly lovely story developing into two women making or deciding to go along with the path before them as they form an unlikely friendship. And then TWIST!
A great many amazing things go down, that you end up circling back, double checking, making certain your Japanese names are not being mixed.
Explosion of events! The End! WTF!
This novel is for anyone who enjoys great writing and literature. It is not a comfortable Japanese read. Take care when reading as it speak and depicts sexual assault, violence, and abuse.
