Super quick, easy, entertaining read but I did have a few problems with it.
The structure was what initially drew me to the story but unfortunately that ended up being one of the downfalls of the book for me. The last few chapters just felt way toooooo convenient and the character development was just lacking.
Also found a few errors in the book:
- A magazine depicting Australia's landscape is described as featuring an image of "Volcanoes spewing out deadly lava" (p. 129). I had to Google it but yes there are volcanoes on mainland Australia but certainly not any active ones so how exactly did these photographers supposedly capture these photos in Australia.
- A devout cricket fan is described as getting up "at midnight if [the match] was in Australia" (p. 232). Midnight in India is somewhere between 2:30AM to 5:30AM in Australia, depending on the state. I've never heard of any professional cricket match starting at that time lol.
One more thing, the female characters were all incredibly flat and one dimensional so either the author doesn't know how to write female characters or the main protagonist has no clue about woman. I'll give the author the benefit of the doubt and go with the latter.
I know it sounds like I'm just bashing on the book now but honestly it was a fun read. I enjoyed being immersed in the culture and definitely appreciated the fact that it wasn't just depicting the lives of lower middle class citizens but also upper middle class citizens so the scope of its representation wasn't so narrow.
