An interesting sci-fi idea by a great author, unlike most of his other novellas, this one suffers from being too short. The setting is too interesting, the character interactions too intriguing, to tie up and expect a satisfying story in less than 10,000 words. The ending was surprising, and sad, but the impact was lessened because there isn't much sympathy with the characters yet and the consequences aren't tangible. Still, an interesting read, and not a bad one if you're looking to kill an hour or two.
