Hallowe'en Party by Agatha Christie
3.0

This has been on my "want to read" list for almost two years, my curiosity piqued by my love of Halloween, Agatha Christie, and the ire directed towards the treatment of the plot in the Branagh adaptation. I'll start there because I saw the movie first (often a crime in these parts) and love almost everything about the film (put me in handcuffs now, I know). The book is its own animal although the influences are clear. I think both can be enjoyed without comparing to the other but at the end of the day the movie has the better story. Better murders, more interesting characters, and a much more invested Poirot.

The main problem with the book is that it feels its own age. Late in the series, Christie is clearly tired of Poirot and his antics--antics which are eerily absent in both the man's actions and his dialogue. All of the characters constantly complain about how society has become fast-paced, immoral, and drug-riddled. It's very KIDS THESE DAYS >:( like maybe it's accurate that the country people are hard on the modern youths but even the kids seem to have a disgust and distaste for their own kind.

Overall it's a bit on the boring side, but only boring in bursts. The main plot points are interesting enough for it to feel worth it but it takes a long time to get there. I hear you saying that's just a Poirot story but actually I do usually enjoy his interrogations and his gathering of clues. Ah well. There are plenty of better-written stories out there. And I do wish that it had more to do with Halloween; after the initial party (VERY fascinating), there isn't much spookiness or festiveness to be had. Then again, it IS England, I don't know what I was expecting really. Go watch A Haunting in Venice basically.
