Lie to Me by J.T. Ellison
3.0

3-stars might be generous...

I found myself having to go back and re-read chapters. This happened several times. I wasn't staying hooked in and started reading on autopilot. Despite zoning out, I still did carry a casual interest in where the story was headed... Yet when the 'big reveal' came all I could do was cringe and think "that's how you decided to do this?" Dismal.

I should have listened to a friend here on Goodreads that warned me it wasn't worth my time.

SUMMARY: The story starts a year after a couple loses their child to SIDS. The wife had been depressed and the husband finds a note that she had left and not to look for her. The husband is torn, he wants to honor her request but it bugs him that she didn't take any of her things (i.e. purse, laptop, clothing) and worries she might commit suicide. Eventually, he calls the police and an investigation begins. You learn he was unfaithful, that there may have been domestic violence, and that their marriage was on the rocks for some time. You also learned he tricked her into getting pregnant and she didn't want a baby to begin with. It also appears he had been trying to sabotage her career. Then a body is found, presumed to be the wife, and the husband is arrested. Meanwhile, you find out the wife is alive and well---she escaped to PAris and is living her new life there. While in Paris a young American couple is murdered. She finds this very sad and goes back to her hotel only to find a bloody knife in her hotel and the police knocking moments later saying they answered a "911" call. Now she's arrested for that murder. Eventually the French police figure out she's the "dead woman" back in America so obviously her husband didn't kill her (but she's still in hot water). Now the FBI, etc. is involved trying to figure out why this couple is being framed. Eventually you find out who is behind all of it, and it's supposed to be shocking, but mostly it's eye rolling and cringe-y (but not in a satisfying way, more like a "oh god why did I binge watch an entire season of this show).
