On the Come Up
by Angie Thomas
A book I devoured within 2 days back in April. Welcome to my June review for it.
On The Come Up was pretty good. I did, however, kind of go back and forth with how to rate this (3 or 4 stars) but just closed my eyes and clicked. So, definitely going with 4 stars unless my review makes me think otherwise.
In this, you will meet Bri Jackson. She is the daughter of a popular rapper named Lawless Jackson. It doesn't hurt that she's always a rapper that somehow get's her time to shine in the limelight. After one of her songs goes viral, her life definitely starts to change. Whether it's for better or worst - you'll have to read it for yourself. But spoiler alert, it's not something she was expecting.
Now even though I haven't gone through anything Bri has - this was still relatable in a way. I don't know what magic Angie has up her sleeve but her books somehow always hit me right in the heart. Which I love and respect because I know that people do go through this every damn day. I will admit that it did bother me a little bit that Bri kind of didn't really grow in my eyes throughout this book. It's like she did something, dealt with the consequence, but then nothing. It didn't really change her but then again... it has been a while since I've read this SO I might just have to dive back into this wonderful book. I definitely volunteer as tribute and I might re-read The Hate U Give beforehand.
Overall, it was good and I totally recommend this book!
